Post Surgical Massage Therapy

$85 per hour

Whether you have just had minor cosmetic surgery or even more complicated surgery such as a hip or knee replacement massage can play a role in the healing process.

Massage therapy has been proven to be helpful following surgery.  It can help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve range of motion, reduce the appearance of scars, and speed recovery time.  It can also help reduce overall stress and the emotional pain from your surgery.

Because each patient has unique surgical and rehabilitation needs, your massage therapy will be tailored to suit your specific needs, and may change as you progress through your recovery.

For many cosmetic surgeries, for example, your chief issues might be pain, discomfort, fluid accumulation and possible scarring.  Lymphatic drainage massage can be quite beneficial in reducing the swelling, reducing the pain from the swelling, and speeding up your recovery.  Myofacial release can help reduce the appearance of scars as well as reduce the pain caused by the scar pulling on and increasing the tightness of the surrounding tissues.

For more complex surgeries, such as a hip replacement or surgury for a torn rotator cuff, lymphatic drainage massage may be used initially to reduce inflammation then myofascial release, deep tissue massage, and other orthopedic massage techniques will be used to restore muscle balance and speed recovery time. Many other techniques, including proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), can be used to increase range of motion following your surgery.

Please contact me to see how massage can help your post surgical recovery.

Seminars/Training Services

imageFor over 10 years I have been conducting a training seminar to the general public called Managing Stress with Massage.  I have taught well over 1,000 people.  I show people how to give a relaxation massage to help relieve stress.  Everyone loves this class!  It's a lot of fun yet it's also very effective at teaching people the value of using massage to relieve stress and showing some simple techniques that are easily learned. Participants remain fully clothed.  I demonstrate each technique then they practice on their partner. Participants leave feeling relaxed, refreshed, and confident in their ability to use massage to reduce their stress.

There is overwhelming evidence that reducing stress reduces sick time and improves performance, with a significant increase in the bottom line of your company.

If your business or organization is interested please contact me for details.

Relaxation Massage

$75 per hour

Sometimes you just want to relax.  Chill out.  Pamper yourself.  Twenty three years of experience have made me an expert at providing the ultimate relaxation massage.  I use swedish massage, acupressure, soft percussion, gentle rocking, and relaxing music. Relax your body and mind, let your worries drift away, enjoy the calmness.

For some, however, you not only want to relax, you need to relax. Being chronically overstressed has been shown to be a significant factor in most diseases and medical conditions.  There is overwhelming evidence that massage can reduce stress. I have taught stress management classes for many years.  Also, my advanced training in massage for anxiety and PTSD has given me many insights into the treatment of excessive stress. In addition to an hour of blissful relaxation I can, if you'd like, offer you many useful tips that you can use to help manage your own stress.

Sports Massage

$95 per hour

Whether you're a professional athlete or a weekend warrior sports massage can be beneficial.  Many different modalities are used depending on your needs.  Pre-event massage focuses on reducing anxiety and on warming up the tissues to make them more pliable and resilient to injury and to increase performance. Recovery massage focuses on restoring physical and mental health after strenous activity.  Massage during training is very helpful to maximize your performance by reducing injuries and by speeding up recovery from exhaustive workouts, allowing you to increase the frequency and intensity of your training.

Fibromyalgia Treatment

$85 per hour

Massage can be very helpful for those living with the pain, fatigue, joint stiffness, and muscle weakness of fibromyalgia.  Indeed, for many it is the treatment of choice.  Studies have repeatedly shown its effectiveness. It reduces substance P (which is higher with fibromyalgia) and raises serotonin levels (which are lower in fibromyalgia).

It is a complex disease which requires a high skill level to treat.  Many modalities can be effectively employed, including myofacial release, swedish massage, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), neuromuscular therapy(NMT), and trigger point therapy. The choice and level of therapies I use will depend on your current state and tolerance level, as well as your history of flare-ups. Direct, open, on-going communication with your therapist during the treatment are essential for success.

Lymphatic Drainage

$75 per hour

Lymphatic Drainage Therapy aims to gently and rhythmically move the lymph through the body, especially swollen areas of the body, relieving pressure and enhancing the functioning of the immune system. As both a preventative and remedial technique, LD can be used for a wide range of purposes including faster recovery from injury and surgery, and strengthened resistance to illness.  It is a very gentle, painless technique.

Lymphatic Drainage is beneficial and effective for the maintenance of chronic lymphedema.  It is also very effective at relieving the temporary lymphedema and swelling often found following cosmetic surgery and other types of surgery, as well as after radiation therapy.  In addition, it can be used to prevent a flare-up, so if your doctor has told you that you are at risk for lymphedema ask if lymphatic drainage is a good choice for you.

Deep Tissue Massage

$95 per hour

Deep Tissue Massage is a form of bodywork that aims to relieve tension in the deeper layers of tissue in the body. Deep Tissue Massage is a highly effective method for releasing chronic stress areas due to misalignment, repetitive motions, and past lingering injuries. Due to the nature of the deep tissue work, open communication during the session is crucial to make sure you don't get too uncomfortable. Keep in mind that soreness is pretty common after the treatment, and that plenty of water should be ingested to aid with the flushing and removal of toxins that will have been released from the deep tissue during the session.

Cancer/Oncology Massage

$85 per hour

Oncology massage was developed specifically for cancer patients, whether active, in remission, or at end of life.  It does not help treat the cancer itself but it can help relieve some of the symptoms from cancer and the side effects from cancer treatments, such as radiation, chemotherapy, medications, and surgery.

Oncology massage can help reduce pain, anxiety, scar tissue, lymphedema, sleep problems, stress, and the sense of isolation. It can increase your feelings of well-being and hope.

Cancer patients have unique needs which must be addressed to make sure that a massage is beneficial to their health. Treatments must be adapted depending on your level of pain, nausea, medications, fatigue, tumor site, blood count, risk of lymphedema or bone fracture, and where you are in your chemotherapy cycle. Advanced training is required to treat cancer patients.

Oncology massage is never forceful or painful.  It is very gentle, nourishing, and relaxing.

Massage for PTSD

$75 per hour

Preliminary evidence shows that massage can help post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other anxiety disorders.  Anything that helps reduce stress can be very helpful for these conditions.

Many people suffer from varying degrees of post traumatic stress.  It could be from the lose of a loved one, fear of losing a sick child, being traumatized by rape, incest, torture, a car accident, or even by witnessing the trauma of someone else.

One major symptom of PTSD is hyperarousal, an extreme form of stress, in which someone is always on edge, always looking out for danger, always on guard.  It can be hard to get to sleep or stay asleep or to concentrate. This is accompanied with exhaustion, fear, even irritability and outbursts of anger.  The stress of PTSD can also affect your relationship with those around you, adding yet even more stress.

Massage has been repeatedly shown to be quite effective in reducing overall stress.  Soothing, caring touch can be very reassuring and help create calmness, relaxation, and a feeling of wellbeing, which can help break the cycle of fear, panic, anxiety, hyperarousal, and exhaustion.

Please note that PTSD is a serious condition.  Massage therapy should only be used in conjunction with treatments from your mental health provider, not as a stand-alone treatment.

Many people have suffered for years from PTSD.  Please contact me to discuss how massage can help.

Attention Veterans:

I currently do pro bono work by volunteering at the Wilmington VA to give free massages to veterans with PTSD. If you are interested in trying massage for your PTSD you must first contact your healthcare provider at the VA. Please call (302)-994-2511 extension 4810 for details.

Orthopedic Massage

$95 per hour

Orthopedic massage is a style of massage therapy focused on treating painful conditions that affect the soft tissues of the body. Because orthopedic massage is designed to treat medical conditions, it requires extensive training. It involves releasing tense muscles, helping to stretch and lengthen tight muscles and tendons, and decompress rigid joints. The goal is to restore full health to the soft tissues of your body, both treating your specific conditions as well as improving your overall well-being.

Medical Massage

$140 per hour

Medical massage uses orthopedic functional assessment to first determine the source of your pain and then employs various techniques to help restore your health.  I am well versed in swedish massage, deep tissue massage, lymphatic drainage massage, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, positional release, and cranial sacral therapy.  Any or all of these might be used in a session, based on your particular needs and any instructions from your physician. This service also involves close coordination with other medical professionals (physicians, physical therapists, etc.), providing assessment and treatment documentation, as well as working with other professionals such as lawyers, claims adjusters, and others as needed.  Please note: This service usually requires a prescription from your physician.

Myofascial Release

$85 per hour

Myofascial release is a form of soft tissue therapy intended to eliminate pain, increase range of motion, and rebalance the entire body. It does this by using massage techniques to stretch the fascia and release the bonds that exist between the fascia, muscles and bones. Fascia is the connective tissue that connects and covers all muscles, organs, and skeletal structures of the body. Direct myofascial release is sometimes known as deep tissue work. Indirect release applies light pressure and gently stretches the fascia; this allows for increased blood circulation and relief from pain.

Craniosacral

$85 per hour

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle yet powerful technique that is effective in releasing neck pain, back pain, and mental stress (among other things). It does this by optimizing the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spine and around the skull. Developed by physician William Sutherland, then refined by John Upledger, this therapy provides a very soothing and relaxing healing experience.

Neuromuscular Therapy

$95 per hour

Neuromuscular therapy, also called trigger point myotherapy, or just trigger point therapy, is the utilization of static pressure on specific myofascial points to relieve pain. It balances the central nervous system. Injury, trauma, postural distortion or stress cause nerves to change their transmission, making the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction.

Trigger points are highly irritated points in muscles which refer pain to other parts of the body. To relieve pain, neuromuscular therapy treats trigger points, as well as other causes of pain, such as ischemia, nerve compression, and postural distortion.  It also enhances the function of joints and muscles, and accelerates the overall healing process by facilitating the release of endorphins.
